We caught up with Simon J Lycett to discuss his favourite Autumnal bloom for a party or wedding this season.
Simon was named ‘Florist of the Year’ by New Covent Garden Flower Market in 2013, and is famed for his floristry work at the marriage of Victoria and David Beckham, the marriage of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall and countless TV and film styling credits including ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’.
Simon’s favourite Autumnal bloom is Dahlias….
“This morning at market I saw these divine dahlias which look like perfect pom poms. Dahlias flower in all sorts of colours so there will be one to harmonise with any colour scheme you choose. Autumn’s palette is warm, natural shades so use garden gleanings and gathered objects such as conkers and team them with the fruits of the season such as dusty purple figs, rich juicy blackberries and bunches of grapes. Throw in some crysanthemums, which are great at this time of the year, to provide bold splashes of colour as well as nerines and belladonna lilies. Of course, you can always get an autumnal feel through softer lighting…candles, candles and more candles! Use a mixture of candles within holders, tall and slender, short squat pillars and elegant tapers.”
Lettice would mix up some fabulous dark pomegranate and champagne cocktails to complement the Dahlias beautifully.
